Alauda – Ine Clerckx

Alauda is the debut album by Belgian classical guitarist Ine Clerckx, built around the idea of memory – how it forms, fades, distorts, and endures. The title refers to the lark, a bird whose high, fleeting song became a family symbol through stories passed down from the artist’s grandfather, a fruit farmer who taught his children to listen for larks in the early morning fields. Today, the bird is rarely heard, yet its appearance still brings moments of recognition and warmth – much like memory itself.

This image of the lark became Clerckx’s central metaphor: something fragile, elusive, and deeply cherished. The album reflects memory in different states – clear and vivid, blurred and incomplete, shaped as much by feeling as by fact. The title Alauda comes from the Latin word for lark, and also echoes alaúde (lute) and aloud, subtly linking voice, instrument, and remembrance. The release date, December 13, is dedicated to Clerckx’s grandparents, whose recent passing had a strong influence on the artistic direction and timing of the project.

Known for her musical intuition and her openness to crossing stylistic boundaries, Ine Clerckx designs programs that focus on the listener’s sound experience, often combining music from different eras and traditions. She studied at LUCA School of Arts in Leuven with Raphaëlla Smits and at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with Allan Neave and Matthew McAllister, and is a laureate of competitions including Belfius Classics and the Concours International Roland Dyens in Paris. Clerckx performs regularly across Europe as a soloist and with her ensembles DRE and Elles.
