Esmeralda’s Waltz – Ivan Petričević

Price range: 9,99 € through 11,99 €

Johann Sebastian Bach and Dusan Bogdanovic share more than the first letter of their last names. On the surface, their music sounds very different. At a deeper level, they speak a similar musical language.

Listening to their works side by side reveals this connection more clearly. Even playing the tracks in a mixed order helps show how their music overlaps within a constantly changing musical world.

Improvisation is a key link between them. Bach, born in 1685, grew up in a musical family where improvising was a basic and expected skill. He was famous for improvising large, complex fugues, and this skill shaped the disciplined counterpoint in his written works.

Bogdanovic, born in 1955, carries a similar love of complexity and improvisation, but in a very different musical environment. His music draws on the traditional sounds of Croatia and the wider Balkan region, as well as jazz. This might make his style seem more eclectic than Bach’s, but the connection between them runs deeper than it first appears.
