Piazzolla Centenario – CRduo

CRduo (André Robles Field, violin – Carlos Alberto Castro, guitar) present their first studio LP: Piazzolla Centenario.

This is a heartfelt homage to one of the greatest musical geniuses of the 20th century in the centennial of his birth: the masterful Argentinian composer and bandoneonist who revolutionized the world of tango and brought it to its highest level of refinement while fusing it with jazz and art music. Piazzolla’s music has consolidated worldwide and continues to fascinate both performers and audiences with its deep emotional impact. When speaking about tango, there is, undeniably, a before and an after of the revolutionary Ástor Piazzolla.

This album includes Piazzolla’s emblematic Estaciones Porteñas (Four Seasons of Buenos Aires), as well as other 6 tangos that have transcended the barrier of time. Additionally, the CD has two bonus tracks (“Recordando a Gardel” EP): maybe the 2 best-known tangos of Carlos Gardel – who was a friend of young Ástor in New York – also arranged for violin and guitar by Carlos Alberto Castro. CRduo hopes to give you goosebumps – just like they get them, every time they play this wonderful music – so that we celebrate together the centenary of the birth of the one and only Ástor Pantaleón Piazzolla.

For a year and a half, guitarist and arranger Carlos Alberto Castro worked on these 10 new concert arrangements. Later on, he involved violinist André Robles Field with the violin edition. Nobody else plays these arrangements for the moment: they are exclusive to CRduo. CRduo collaborates closely, in every aspect of the interpretation, to convey passion and to excite tango lovers. They pursue this goal through original arrangements in the manner of the great Ástor, who was a regular arranger of his own work. Yet, they intend to be faithful and respectful of his distinctive style.
This production is affectionately dedicated to the living legend and pioneer of the violin in Central America, maestro Walter Field. He is not only André’s first violin teacher but also his grandfather (nicknamed “Papa”). Carlos met Walter Field a couple of decades ago and he has always been an inspiring music teacher and friend for many generations of Costa Rican musicians.
Piazzolla Centenario has many interesting features besides the music. Every tango has its own illustration by the Argentinian visual artist José Luis Rugilo. The portraits of CRduo were made by the Austrian cellist and photographer Maria Frodl. With those artworks, our Costa Rican graphic designer Daniela Castro neatly managed to assemble a stunning design for the digipak, the CD and the booklet.
